About the Artist Lester Edenborough

The pictures presented on this website were painted by encaustic artist, Lester Edenborough, using molten coloured beeswax and heated metal implements.

Lester, who is a left-brained semi-retired technologist, discovered encaustic painting in 1990 when he saw a man at an arts and crafts fair painting with coloured waxes and, among other tools, a travel iron! Lester, who was a keen photographer, had previously been given a beginner's oil painting kit from his wife. She was growing tired of his saying, "Oh! I do wish I could paint that" when confronted by the grandeur of mountains and lochs when they lived in the West Highlands of Scotland.

It is very difficult to photograph such scenery, hence Lester’s desire to paint it. However, the left-brain part of Lester’s mind wanted to exactly paint it as it was, but he didn't have the skill. His right-brained heart wanted him to be more of an impressionist painter, but he had no idea how or where to start. However, when he saw what could and could not be done with molten wax his heart won! He felt he had to try it, so his wife bought him an encaustic painting kit for Christmas. It opened up for him the wonderful world of art.

By April 1991, Lester sold his first small picture for £30. In June in an 'at home’, 5-hour exhibition, he took nearly £500! He believes that he has a God-given skill. On the strength of such encouraging feedback, he started a small home-based business, Lyrical Beeswax Paintings (formerly ‘Wax Lyrical’). Until he became disabled and somewhat immobile, he exhibited and demonstrated at craft fairs, arts & craft festivals, county fairs, and various art exhibitions including the Bromley Art Society and the prestigious Autumn Art Show in East Grinstead, West Sussex.

Lester is developing this website, www.encaustics.co.uk, from which he hopes to sell both originals, limited edition prints, cards and calendars.

Lester is always interested in what people have to say about his work and would welcome your constructive comments on both the art and the ease of use of the website. You can can contact him by email or from the CONTACTS page
